Sarge, a compassionate 9-year-old German Shepherd, showcased the remarkable ability of dogs to exhibit kindness and care, extending their nurturing instincts beyond their own species. Owned by Cheryl Stephan, a woman with a heart for adopting orphaned animals, Sarge became a devoted guardian to several fawns in need.
Cheryl had a history of adopting and caring for orphaned animals, and Sarge, with his gentle nature, formed special connections with the adopted creatures. One particular fawn, named Buckwheat, held a unique place in Sarge’s heart.
From the moment they met, Sarge exhibited warmth and care, stepping into the role of Buckwheat’s guardian. The German Shepherd took an active role in caring for the fawn, ensuring its well-being and safety. Wherever Buckwheat went, Sarge followed, overseeing his every move.
As Buckwheat grew and gained independence, Sarge continued to watch over him, even retrieving him if he ventured too far. Eventually, Cheryl released Buckwheat back into the wild, leaving Sarge visibly saddened by the departure of his adopted fawn.
Despite initial concerns that Sarge might not form similar bonds with other animals, Cheryl was pleasantly surprised. When she brought in new fawns for rehabilitation, Sarge once again assumed the role of a caring babysitter, showcasing his enduring compassion for orphaned creatures.
